Welcome back! Orientation – Fall 2014

With the start of the new academic year around the corner, the EGSA-AÉDÉ would like to extend a warm welcome to students both new and returning. We are the departmental association for graduate students (M.Ed., M.A., Ph.D., and graduate certificate programs) in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa. To help new students transition into academic life in the Faculty of Education here at the University of Ottawa, we’ve aggregated the orientation activities that various campus organizations are putting on:

EGSA-AÉDÉ

We (the EGSA-AÉDÉ) will be hosting events throughout the month for graduate students in the Faculty of Education. We will be running tours of our building (Lamoureux Hall) to point out places of interest.

The tours will be starting in the LMX Lobby and will be running on:

  • Wednesday, September 3rd, at 4:15 p.m.
  • Thursday, the 4th, at 4:15 p.m.
  • Monday, the 8th, at 4:15 p.m.
  • Tuesday, the 9th, at 4:15 p.m.
  • and Friday, the 12th at 1:00 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to become familiar with some of the places that you might have to go to and some of the people you might have to interact with during your time with the Faculty of Education!

We are also in the process of developing a policies and procedures resource to help our members navigate various processes, administrative or otherwise, and answer some frequently asked questions about topics such as student space, work/labour issues, useful contact people, and many others. Stay tuned for this to launch right here on this website in early Fall 2014!

If you’re interested in how we work, our first Association Committee meeting of the new academic year will be on Sept. 11 at 4:30 p.m. (location TBD). If you’re interested in getting involved with the EGSA-AÉDÉ (and who wouldn’t be?), we are hosting an information session on Sept. 18 (time and location TBD). Finally, we are hosting our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. (location TBD). The AGM is where the various student representatives that sit on faculty committees are elected. If this is of interest to you, we strongly recommend attending the information session for some insight into the roles and responsibilities available.

Faculty of Education (Sept. 2nd, 5:00 p.m., LMX 122)

The Faculty of Education’s Orientation session starts at 5:00 p.m. and provides a quick overview of some of the services available to you and people you might run into. There will be language-stream specific breakout sessions after a welcoming address, and a reception starting at 6:30 p.m. in Café Ecolo (the LMX Café).

GSAÉD Grad Week (http://gsaed.ca/101/)

GSAÉD is the student association for all graduate students at the University of Ottawa. GSAÉD’s Grad Week runs from Sunday, August 31st to Friday, September 5th and there are a variety of events related to both student life and social activities. You can find out more about the week’s schedule from their website (http://gsaed.ca/101/).

Of note, GSAÉD is hosting an orientation session for many of the services available on campus at 8:00 a.m. on Sept 2nd. This is highly recommended for students who are new to the University of Ottawa. More information about this specific event can be found here: http://gsaed.ca/101/orientation/
